SIDP Chatroom

The SIDP Internet chatroom allows two or more people to hold a text conversation, similar to instant messaging.

Proposed Benefits of Internet Chatroom Discussion
  • Use of real or fictitious names seems to offer some anonymity, possibly increasing comfort with expressing personal perspective.
  • Text-based conversation seems to eliminate the potential interruptions of oral conversation.
  • Reviewable discussion history.

SIDP Chatroom Hours
You are welcome to post a comment or question in the SIDP Internet chatroom 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. If you do not notice a reply quickly enough, you are welcome to follow up via email and SIDP social media (see "Connect To" panel at top right).

Visiting the SIDP Chatroom
  • Chatroom Specs:
    • Network: SwiftIRC
    • URL: irc.SwiftIRC.net
    • Chatroom Name: #SIDP

  • Using Mibbit
    • Click on the "Mibbit" button at top right
    • Log into the SIDP chatroom:
      • Click on the dropdown menu to the right of "Connect:" (might display "Mibbit [webirc]")
      • Scroll down to "SwiftIRC [webirc]"
      • Enter a name you'd like to use for the current chat session into the “Nick:” field
      • Enter “#SIDP” (without the double quotes) in the textbox next to "Channel:"
      • Press the “Connect” button
    • When the "#SIDP" tab (typically the third) is displayed, type a comment or greeting into the bottom comment field and press your keyboard's “Enter” key to submit the comment.
    • You should soon receive a reply.

  • Using QWebIRC
  • Although QWebIRC might start easily, it seems somewhat vulnerable to connection disruption, apparently causing posted comments to not reach the chatroom.

While SIDP is in the chatroom, if no comments other than your own are displayed within a minute or so, Mibbit might offer a somewhat more stable chatroom connection.

    • Click on the "Chat Now!" button at top right
    • Log into the SIDP chatroom:
      • Enter a name you'd like to use for the current chat session into the “Nickname” field
      • “#SIDP” should be in the “Channel” field
      • Press the “Connect” button
    • Type a comment or greeting into the bottom comment field and press your keyboard's “Enter” key to submit the comment
    • You should soon receive a reply.

  • Using Third-Party Chat Software
  • CNet.com seems to list downloadable chat software (http://download.cnet.com/windows/chat/3150-2150_4-0.html) from various sources and seems to attempt to weed out virus-ridden offerings from its list.
